How to use the ETSi4334 to
SOLVE IMMUNITY PROBLEMS
This step by step guide explains how to use the ETSi4334 to locate the tracks
and components that are responsible for immunity problems at a particular
frequency.
It is assumed that you know the problem frequency as a result of work done in a
test cell.
STEP 1
Place the PCB on to the glass platen of the ETSi4334 with the component side
uppermost. Push the PCB into the top left-hand corner up against the origin
guides. Make sure the ETSi4334 is plugged in and switched on.
STEP 2
Connect the PCB to a suitable power supply. The ETSi4334 provides +5v, -5v,
+12v and -12vfor this purpose if suitable. The PCB should be connected to any
other equipment and cables required for it to operate normally; Tests should
only be carried out with the PCB operating normally.
STEP 3
Using a suitable noise source, inject a signal into the PCB at the problem
frequency.
STEP 4
Run the ETSi software and select the 'XY-Plot' page. An XY-Plot is a
colour-coded map of the emissions from the PCB. Enter the start coordinates
(usually 0,0), the stop coordinates (use the rulers on the ETSi4334 as a
guide), the frequency (which will be the same as the injected signal) and the
resolution - you can run the Plot Wizard to guide you through entering this
information by clicking the 'Wizard' button.
STEP 5
Run the XY-Plot by clicking the 'Start' button. Depending on the size of your
PCB and the resolution you selected the plot will typically take between 2 and
20 minutes. You can stop or pause the plot at any time by pressing the 'Stop'
or 'Pause' buttons.
STEP 6
When the plot has finished the emissions from the PCB are displayed as a colour
coded map. The areas of the PCB that are being affected by the injected signal
will show up as areas of high emissions - i.e. the dark areas of the plot.
Testing Tips* To view the finished plot in 3D, click the 'View 3D'
button.
* To re-plot an area of the PCB at maximum
resolution, drag a box around that area of the plot with the right mouse button
and then click the 'Zoom Start' button.
* To overlay a Gerber plot of the PCB tracks or
silkscreen, select FIle|Import Gerber from the main menu.
* To make this plot a reference, click the 'Make
Plot the Reference' button. A reference plot can be used to show the difference
between two plots - to highlight the changes made by a modification for
instance.
* To save the plot to disk, click the 'Save'
button.
* To print the plot, click the 'Print'
button.
* If you want details of the PCB to be saved in
the file or appear on printouts then you must enter the information on the EUT
page.
